There is nothing so agonizing to the fine skin of vanity as the application of a rough truth.

Ugh, trade show time again!

Yes, trade shows… for the most part they really suck. The dog and pony show at the shows and the whole after party thing is so tired that the best part about trade shows coming to town are all the great friends that roll through NYC during the week. It’s great to have an opportunity to hang out over a few drinks and good conversation.

Just about the only trade show that doesn’t make my skin crawl is Capsule which just concluded last night. It’s the first one I have not attended. I just decided on Monday morning when I woke up that I just didn’t feel like hanging around ‘fashion’ people (I know I’m a self hating mother fucker).

Luckily, the whole web was there for me (us), ready to disperse the information across the blogosphere with their take or a regurgitation of someones elses take on what was worth seeing.

One man who is definitely not regurgitating someone else’s point of view is my boy Chuck Welch who is  behind RUPTUREreport. I’ve been sleeping on giving Chuck a plug here for months but if you haven’t visited his site, give it a try. Chuck put up a good little recap on what he saw at Capsule this week. And by the sounds of it and from the looks of what has been on the blogs, there wasn’t much newness being shown.

All that being said, after I visit LA next week I have commited to being at Compass next month. What can I say, a man has to work.

Such a tease…

I’ve long coveted a Land Rover Defender. Even though I don’t really need a car, I often find myself checking Cars.com for used ones in the NYC area, which you usually can find a few of. You will of course pay a premium for even a heavily used one because of good ol’ supply and demand.

It’s the bare-bones bulky awkwardness that draws me to the Defender. There is something about something so utilitarian that is so appealing to a man. It gets our testerone pumping. Essentially the same body-on-frame design from 1948, the Defender is still hand-assembled. But with every Defender competitor having moved into the luxury class what’s Land Rover to do? Lux out the Defender, of course.

Autoblog is reporting that Land Rover is releasing a limited-production Fire & Ice editions “that come packed with all the features they could fit in the Defender: Recaro buckets, leather and Alcantara trim, diamond-turned alloys, color-coded head- and tail- lights, glass sunroof panel, running boards and more. The Fire edition comes in a special Vesuvius Orange metallic paint, the Ice edition in Alaska white, both offset by Santorini black accents. All that kit drives the price of the special Land Rover up to €68,400, the equivalent of about $95,000. Just 850 examples will be on offer in various markets across Europe, China and in South Africa.” Like many good things (like universal healthcare) you will not find these or the run of the mill Defenders in the US anytime soon. Check out the images here.

Two things I want to say about this clip:

1. People like this pilot have very, very big balls, and a level of coordination I can only dream of having.
2. Red Bull is an awesome brand if for just one thing- getting involved in exciting sporting events, and working at owning them. Other corporations should take note of what they are doing here.
3. Embedding video clips is super fun. (message from cTo, “that’s 3 things!”)

SuperFuture v4.0 Launch

Posted: December 4th, 2008 | Author: christopher | Filed under: other | Tags: | No Comments »

Superfuture.com has overhauled their site and given it a complete makeover in its latest version, 4.0. A much needed overhaul, clean and simple, just like we like things. The site has been a  very useful tool for all for international shoppers and travelers for years. Although I don’t use it as much as I used to, but it is still a great way for people new to a city to get a sense of what a city commercially offers.
